The market remains unchanged overall this week despite another large offering of high quality superfine merino wool ex. New Zealand sold in Melbourne on Thursday. Minimal change in all the Authentico index’s except for 15 micron which was the only one to finish in positive territory for the week. The 16/17.5 micron categories struggled to maintain this week with a genuine lack of demand compared to the previous couple of weeks. Global demand has slowed with Europe experiencing very quiet trading conditions, whilst China applies price pressure across the range of microns due to poor economic conditions. The crossbred market potentially shows no signs of improvement with an over supply internationally. Wool quality has been highlighted again this week with international mills calling for care to be taken in shearing sheds to improve clip preparation and make sure that all contamination be isolated and removed.

Forecast

A reduction in volume over the next couple of weeks to approx. 40,000 bales on offer per week, will surely assist the current lack of demand. Add to this grower resistance of not accepting these pricing levels until market conditions improve globally. We are traditionally moving into autumn shearing and the nature of the selection will change in terms wool quality, vegetable matter, length and strength.
