AUSTRALIAN WEEKLY MARKET REPORT
Comment
We had a large superfine offering from New Zealand on sale in Melbourne this week. Initially, this might have influenced the easing in prices on 16.5 to 17.5 micron for similar Australian origin wool. However, the majority of the New Zealand offering was RWS certified and to a lesser extent, Authentico certified. However, these wools sold for around a 9% premium to the similar noncertified types that were recorded at Australian auctions. While the market is low, we would encourage growers to continue to focus on quality and certification. RWS, in particular, is still in demand and these market premiums are rewarding those growers who remain focused on quality to ensure a better return.

Forecast
The Sydney sale next week is the last of the designated superfine sales. We are not expecting any significant volume of fine wool to be on the market. We will not see any significant supply of fine wool again until August / September. According to AWEX auction statistics, firsthand offered wool is now down by around 14% year on year. This is now more in line with the AWTA key test data. All types and descriptions are impacted by this reduction in production.
